The Conference Thematic Areas are as follows:

(1) The potential of Synthetic Biology in revolutionizing modern medicine in Africa with the following sub-themes: 
  • Synthetic biology prospect and challenges in Africa
  • Application of Synthetic biology in healthcare delivery in Africa
  • Addressing Synthetic biology research gap in Africa d. Ethics and Regulations of synthetic biology in Africa
(2) Addressing the challenge of dual use research in Africa with the following subthemes:
  • Bioethics in Africa
  • Ethical/Regulatory Issues specifically for Africa in relation to dual use research
  • Laboratory biosecurity and biosafety
  • International biosecurity Conventions: Biological Weapons Convention and United Nations 1540 Security Council Resolution
(3) Mitigating biological threats in Africa using emerging biotechnology with the following sub-themes: 
  • CRISPR/CAS9 Technology
  • genomics for the management of infectious diseases and epidemics
  • Perspective on Genetically modified Organisms
(4)  Maximizing Bioeconomy in Africa with the following sub-themes: 
  • developing policies and strategies to enhance bioeconomy in Africa
  • maximizing emerging biotechnologies to stimulate industrial and economic growth in Africa
(5) Emerging Infectious Diseases as an accelerating phenomenon with the following subthemes:
  • One Health
  • Emerging infectious disease response in Africa
  • Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR).
  • Clinical trials
  • Infectious disease burden and trends across Africa (Ebola, Lassa, MERS, Yellow Fever,
Pandemic Influenza) (6) Importance of Data in enhancing health security with the following sub-themes: 
  • Data generation and use during health emergencies
  • Understanding the fifth industrial revolution
  • Data ethics and governance
  • Computational biology
  • Artificial Intelligence in healthcare delivery
(7) Biobanking infrastructure, with the following sub-themes:
  • Biobank project across Africa
  • Minimum characteristics to establish a Biobanking for EID (Emerging Infectious Disease) specimens in Africa
  • The economics of biobanking
  • Biobanking Networks (H3Afica, etc.) and societies (ISBER, ESBB, BBMRI, etc.).
(8) The Cultural, Anthropological, Social and Economic Impact of Emerging Infectious  Diseases (CASE), with the following sub-themes:
  • African cultural practices and management of biosecurity threats
  • Community engagement in the fight against emerging infectious diseases
  • Ethics and the management of EIDs in Africa
  • Contextualizing policy approaches and intervention strategies to fit local responses to biosecurity threats in Africa
(9) Other emerging issues with the following sub-themes:
  • Climate change and biosecurity threats in Africa
  • Harnessing the digital revolution and digital platforms to advance biosecurity in Africa
Guidelines for Abstract Submission   A 200-300 word electronic abstract must be submitted latest by 30th of June, 2023. Kindly submit your abstract to bobadoyed@getafrica.org. Specify platform or poster presentation preference. You will be notified of the fate of your submission by 30th of July 2023.   Important Dates to note:
  • Abstract submission due: May June 2023.
  • Abstract acceptance notifications: July 30, 2023.
